NAUTICAL QUALIFICATIONS
Nautical Qualifications and What They Allow
Without nautical qualification: No nautical qualification is required to navigate motorized boats under 5 meters in length and with a power not exceeding 11.26 kW (15 HP).
Leisure nautical qualifications in Spain are regulated by Royal Decree 875/2014 of October 10 and include the following.
Navigation License (formerly titulín) does not require any exam.
Who is it for and what requirements must be met?
For individuals over 16 years old, who complete a theoretical course of at least 2 hours, perform 4 hours of basic safety and navigation practices, and obtain a psychotechnical certificate.
What does it allow?
- Operating boats up to 6 meters in length.
- Going away from the coast up to 2 miles.
- Navigating only during the day.
- Operating boats without power limit.
- Use of all types of personal watercraft.
PNB (Basic Navigation Skipper)
Who is it for and what requirements must be met?
For individuals over 18 years old (16 years for the theoretical exam) who pass a psychophysical examination in accordance with current regulations, pass the corresponding theoretical exam, have completed 8 hours of basic safety and navigation practices for PNB, and have completed a 4-hour PNB radiocommunications course.
What does it allow?
- Operating pleasure boats up to 8 meters in length. •
- Going away from the coast up to 5 miles.
- Navigating both day and night.
- Use of all types of personal watercraft.
PER (Recreational Craft Skipper)
Who is it for and what requirements must be met?
For individuals over 18 years old, who pass a psychophysical examination at an authorized center, pass the corresponding theoretical exam, complete basic safety and navigation practices, and take a 4-hour practical course for short-range radio operator.
What does it allow?
- Operating pleasure boats up to 15 meters in length.
- Going away from the coast up to 12 miles and between islands within an archipelago.
- Use of all types of personal watercraft.
- Navigating both day and night. • Operating boats without power limit.
- Providing professional services such as transportation, maneuvers in ports and beaches, sea trials, and lifeguarding.
Yacht Skipper
Who is it for and what requirements must be met?
For those who already hold the PER title, pass the corresponding theoretical exam, complete 24 hours of basic safety and navigation practices, and pass the psychotechnical examination.
- The Yacht Skipper title allows you to operate boats up to 24 meters in length.
- Going away from the coast sailing up to 150 miles.
- The Yacht Skipper title allows navigation both day and night. • Use of all types of personal watercraft.
- Providing transport services, maneuvers in ports and beaches, sea trials, and rescue services with additional endorsements.
- Providing tourist excursions and recreational fishing services with up to 6 passengers on board, with additional endorsements.
