Engine inspection

Nautical engines require maintenance at least once a year to ensure that we go sailing under safe conditions and without fear of engine failures. If we perform regular engine inspections, we achieve optimal performance and extend the life of the engine, resulting in fewer future repairs and, therefore, saving on future repairs.

Saltwater pump repair and impeller replacement

Saltwater pumps are responsible for drawing seawater to propel it through the engine for cooling purposes.

Some pumps are located in the stern drive, while others are part of the engine. The impeller inside the pump is made of rubber and is responsible for propelling water through the engine. However, it needs to be replaced periodically due to wear and tear caused by friction. In some cases, when the pump is severely damaged, it may require a complete rebuild, including the replacement of seals, bearings, main shaft, or pump body.

Cleaning of the engine coolant

The engine coolant are elements that motors carry on to cool two fluids that cross inside them. One of them is always cold water from the sea, exchanging temperatures making an open circuit with another one that could be engine oil, fuel, hydraulic oil, antifreeze, etc.

Time and engine operations later, the rest of salt, lime and barnacles put inside the tubes, obstructing the way, reducing the amount of cold water and producing a bad refrigeration. This could make a heating of the engine, if it function in bad conditions and producing greater wear or worst problems.

It is necessary to keep the refrigeration circuit in top conditions to save in more expensives repairs.

Replacing stern drive bellows

Stern drive bellows are made of rubber and their function is to provide a watertight seal to the hull, preventing water from entering its interior. Stern drive bellows are only present in boats equipped with an inboard-outboard motor and are fitted between the transom and the stern drive.

These are crucial components that should be replaced to prevent potential water ingress.

Ensuring the watertightness of the hull is essential for safe navigation, but many people don’t do this maintenance.

Replacement of bottom valves and through-hull fittings

Bottom valves are closing valves that boats have at each water intake, such as in bathrooms, sinks, engine cooling and showers.

As these components are located below the waterline, bottom valves and through-hull fittings experience continuous and higher wear than other parts due to the salty and humidity conditions in which they operate.

They should be inspected every year because they are susceptible to corrosion from seawater. If they fail or do not close properly, water could go inside without any control, being able to go down the ship.

Replacement of horns/shaft seals

The horn is the connection between the propeller and the engine. It is a tube with seal boxes and propeller shaft inside. It means, it is the passage of the propeller shaft through the boat’s hull.

The shaft seals, in turn, are the system to avoid water entry through the horn. They avoid water from entering through the propeller shaft.

There are various types of shaft seals, and due to their working conditions of friction and heat, it is important to keep them in good conditions to ensure the hull’s watertightness.
